Euphonium and Bass Tuba
Pier Giacomo De Matti
Pier Giacomo De Matti, born in Rome in 1985, began his musical journey at a young age in Genazzano, under the guidance of M° Enrico Silvestri. He went on to deepen his study of the euphonium with M° Guglielmo Battistelli and, in preparation for his Conservatory entrance exam, with M° Gerlando Mula.
He continued his training at the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory of Music in Rome, where he studied euphonium with M° Fabrizio Iacomini. In 2019 he earned his Level I Academic Diploma in Euphonium with a score of 110/110 and, that same year, won by audition the position of principal euphonium of the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory Wind Orchestra. In 2021 he completed his Level II Academic Diploma in Euphonium with a score of 110/110 cum laude.
Throughout his training he furthered his skills through masterclasses and courses with some of the most important international euphonium and brass performers, including Luciano De Luca, Matteo Caramaschi, Steven Mead, Bastien Baumet, Mauro Martins, and the members of the French ensemble OPUS333: Jean Daufresne, Corentin Morvan, Vianney Desplantes and Patrick Wibart.
His concert activity has involved him with several ensembles. He was euphonist with the Orchestra Popolare a Colori of Genazzano, with which he performed in Italy and abroad as part of the "Sete Sóis Sete Luas" Festival, and took part in the recording IN ITINERE, released by Ars Spoletium. He has also collaborated with the "Luigi Gardini" Municipal Concert Band of Genazzano, the "Ergo Cantemus" Wind Orchestra of Tivoli, the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory Wind Orchestra in Rome, the Euphonium Ensemble of the Italian Euphonium Academy, and other musical organizations.
Among his most significant artistic experiences is a solo performance of Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, from Gustav Mahler's Rückert-Lieder, with the orchestra of M° Rinaldo Muratori at the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome. He has also taken part in concerts with the "Ergo Cantemus" Wind Orchestra conducted by M° Giuseppe Galli, featuring international Besson soloist Bastien Baumet, and in a project led by Dutch composer Jacob de Haan.
Alongside his concert activity, he has developed a path in musical arrangement. As part of the project La canzone napoletana dal Medioevo al Pop ("The Neapolitan Song from the Middle Ages to Pop"), curated by M° Roberto Iantorni, he created arrangements of several Neapolitan traditional songs, including Alla fiera di Mast'Andrea, Te voglio bene assaie and 'O Surdato 'nnammurato.
He also devotes particular attention to teaching. From 2021 to 2023 he taught euphonium at the Chris Cappell College Music Lyceum in Anzio, on the AT55 teaching class, contributing to the training of young musicians. He has also gained teaching experience at music lyceums and private schools.
In 2023 he undertook a further course of specialization at the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome, enrolling in the Bass Tuba two-year program with M° Fabrizio Iacomini. The program concluded in 2025 with a Level II Academic Diploma in Bass Tuba, earned with a score of 105/110.
His artistic training is thus defined by a path that brings together concert performance, teaching, arrangement and specialist study of low brass, with particular focus on the euphonium and bass tuba.
